UCA Students Create Pro-Bono Charity Commercial for The Lewy Body Society

In collaboration with Sony and Cooke Optics, students from the University for the Creative Arts (UCA) have produced a pro-bono charity commercial for The Lewy Body Society, launched globally on World Lewy Body Day (28 January 2025). Shot at Sony’s Digital Media Production Centre Europe (DMPCE) at Pinewood Studios, the project provided students with access to cutting-edge filmmaking technology, including the Sony Venice 2 camera and Cooke Panchro/i Classic lenses, ensuring a professional-grade production. The commercial was directed by BA (Hons) Film Production student Dominic Hodgson, who was personally motivated to raise awareness about Lewy Body Dementia due to his own connection with the cause.

“Lewy Body is the second most common form of dementia, but awareness remains low. It’s crucial for charities like The Lewy Body Society to show that support is available,” said Hodgson.

The commercial received high praise from Jacqueline Cannon, CEO of The Lewy Body Society, who emphasized its lasting impact on social media and public outreach.

“As a small charity, this commercial is a game-changer. It’s not just something we’ll use for a few weeks—it will continue to raise awareness for years to come.”

The project also served as an invaluable industry experience for UCA students. Stephen Bull, the film’s Director of Photography, highlighted how working with professional equipment helped achieve a warm and homely visual tone that complemented the campaign’s message.

Industry leaders applauded the initiative, with Carey Duffy, Director of Product Experiences at Cooke Optics, recognizing its uniqueness as a client-led, professional learning opportunity. Stuart Newton, Regional Sales Head for Northern Europe at Sony, noted how the collaboration explored new innovative workflows in filmmaking. UCA Associate Professor Christopher Nicolson expressed immense pride in the students, emphasizing their ability to deliver a broadcast-quality commercial under real industry conditions.

“Our students didn’t just gain hands-on experience—they created a professional product that directly benefits an important cause. This kind of real-world project will undoubtedly impress future employers.”

The commercial will also be showcased at the 8th International Lewy Body Dementia Conference in Amsterdam (29-31 January 2025), further extending its reach and impact.
